Project Overview

Global Wellness Challenge (GWC) is Cigna’s annual 6-week fitness event, engaging 30,000+ employees and their families each summer. To proactively identify and address potential issues during the Global Wellness Challenge, our team developed a real-time status dashboard. It tracked key metrics such as participant count, team count, replica lag, and other technical indicators to ensure a smooth and reliable user experience throughout the challenge season.

The Problem

The platform’s performance had been monitored manually by running query scripts across different systems — a time-consuming process prone to delays. The team needed a faster, more visual way to catch issues as they happened.

As the UI Designer

I worked with the engineers to:

  • Define key metrics to surface

  • Design the dashboard UI in Figma

  • Provide documentation and handoff

  • Support development through follow-up and iteration

Design Solutions

Needed quick data for sharing

Designed layout optimized for screenshots, with key stats above the fold

Unclear status definitions

Included hover-to-explain tooltips on AWS categories

Added color-coded categories & data source labels on main dashboard

Outcome

  • A centralized internal dashboard built in under 2 weeks

  • Reduced manual checks and improved engineer response time

  • Served as a foundational tool for future monitoring efforts

  • Gave intern engineers a real, functional product to build and launch

Reflection

This was my first time working with engineering interns, which made the design process both collaborative and uniquely thoughtful. I had to quickly understand their technical skillsets and communicate clearly to ensure the design served its purpose without overburdening development. It taught me how to balance vision with feasibility.

With more time, I would have loved to:

  • Add filtering or data drill-down features for greater control

  • Implement data export or copy-to-clipboard tools for easier sharing with business teams

"Satoko did an awesome job leading the design of our internal status dashboard — she really took the time to understand where the interns were technically and designed something that was not only polished and clear, but also realistic to build. Her thoughtfulness and communication made a big difference in helping the project run smoothly."
